Material Lifts

 Type B Material Lift exterior Material or Freight Platform Lifts are hoisting and lowering mechanisms normally classified as an elevator, equipped with a car which moves within a guide system serving two or more landings, for the purpose of transporting materials which are manually or automatically loaded or unloaded. Material Lifts without an automatic transfer device are Type A or Type B.

  • On Type A Material Lifts no persons are permitted to ride.
  • On Type B Material Lifts authorized personnel are permitted to ride.

Material Lifts fall under Canadian Standards Association (CSA) B44-00 (latest edition) elevating code. Sections 7.4, 7.5, 7.6 define the regulations governing Material Lifts. The most commonly installed Material Lift is a Type B.

 Type B Material Lift interior Type B Material Lifts apply to lifts that move material without automatic transfer devices and are limited as follows:

  • Access to and usage of Type B Material Lifts is restricted to authorized personnel
  • The rated speed is not to exceed 0.15 m/s (30 ft/min)
  • There is penetration of only one floor
  • Travel does not exceed 5000 mm (200 inches)
  • They are operated only by continuous-pressure control devices
  • They shall not be accessible to the general public
  • The upper limit of travel shall be:
    • Level with the penetrated floor; or
    • Level with the top landing where no floor is penetrated
  • They are permitted to serve one or more intermediate landings, provided that these landings have approved hoistway door locking devices, approved hoistway doors, car doors or gate electric contacts.
