Elevator Modernizations

Modernization Upgrade Options

Delta Elevator Co. Ltd. has a wealth of experience in all types of elevator modernizations.

From simple cab upgrades to complete control system and elevator cab modernizations, Delta has the solution that customers are looking for.

Cab Upgrades

Cosmetic and functional cab modernization to the elevator interiors can include:

  • Complete replacement of cab walls & ceilings
  • New fixtures or relocation of existing fixtures
  • Resurfacing of the elevator cab panels
  • Increase ceiling heights possible
  • Replacement of the elevator ceiling and lighting
  • Installation of an emergency telephone

Door Operator Upgrades

The door operator that drives the elevator doors are prone to wear due to abuse and constant use. Many parts required to refurbish the operator are no longer available, replacement of the operator is normally required. This type of modernization can include:

  • Replacement of the existing door operator
  • Replacement of the door reopening devices (safety edge or dual-beam light ray) with a light curtain, which protects passengers from being struck by the door.

Hydraulic Cylinder Replacement

New in-ground hydraulic elevator cylinders are now protected from corrosion by encasing the cylinder in PVC. For hydraulic elevators over 20 years old with an in-ground cylinder without this PVC protection, there may have a corrosion problem that could pose a serious safety issue at any time.

The TSSA has released an Information Bulletin 243 / 10 regarding the options available to owners of single bottom hydraulic cylinders.  The IB  indicates that the expected time line for resolving single bottom hydraulic cylinder issues is 2013.

Hydraulic Pumping

Unit Replacement: Hydraulic elevator valves and pumping unit may need to have part or all of the unit replaced. Frequent re-leveling, over heating, and erratic stopping at floor levels may indicate that this type of modernization is required. Options available for this type of modernization include:

  • Replacement of the entire pumping unit (tank, motor, pump, and valve)
  • Replacement of the control valve
  • Replacement of the pump and motor.

Controller Replacement

Elevators are expected to last a long time, but after a while some parts wear out and are no longer available. Delta stocks a large number of components for older elevators, but there may be parts that Delta cannot stock. After a while, the only solution to ongoing elevator service problems is to replace the obsolete relay-logic based elevator controller with a new state-of-the-art control system. Delta has been manufacturing its own CSA-approved controller for over 30 years with the expertise and knowledge required to replace virtually any control system. From lifts for the physically challenged to high-speed passenger elevators, Delta has the right controller.

Machine Replacement

After a number of years, a traction elevator machine may sustain sufficient degradation that may cause it to need complete replacement. At times a partial replacement is warranted, such as a conversion from a DC machine to an AC, where the motor is replaced, the MG set is discarded and an AC drive is used.
